Wytwórnia Ipecac istnieje id 1999 roku. Założyli ją Mike Patton i Greg Werckman (były wokalista Duh). Oryginalnym zamysłem było wydanie pierwszego albumu Fantômasa, lecz gdy wieść o labelu się rozniosła, wielu artystów tworzących muzykę niekonwencjonalną i często trudną w odbiorze postanowiło spróbować i wysłać demo. Zaowocowało to kilkoma kontraktami, także sam Patton zaprosił do wytwórni swoich kolegów (The Melvins, Trevor Dunn). Obecnie Ipecac wydaje wielu artystów dopiero sięgających po popularność, ale i takich, którzy już dawno ją zdobyli. Wsród sław znajdują się oczywiście The Melvins, ISIS, Queens Of The Stone Age czy kompozytor John Eric Kaada.
